The Outlets are Coming, The Outlets are Coming!
The Canadian outlet market is seen by consumers, retailers and real estate developers as an untapped and underserved market. Many Canadians are quite familiar with the American-style high-end outlet malls through their cross border shopping junkets. Those centres typically have the leading designer and brand name manufacturers as the main allure for the aspirational consumers. Travel times and cost along with long border cross times are perceived to be worth the trouble of shopping in the US.  Read More

2013 – The Year of the Department Store
Looking at 2013 in the rear view mirror, the top retail stories reveal the incredible amount of activity that shaped and will continue to impact the retail industry in Canada into the future. From a pure monetary perspective, Sobey’s $5.8 billion acquisition of Safeway and Loblaws $12.4 billion swallowing of Shopper’s Drug Mart dominated the financial fronts. Throw in the $6 billion investment of Neiman Marcus by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and you had “the year of years” for retail investment. Although these made for sensational headline news stories, the most activity in the retail industry in terms of movement was from the department store segment. Here is a list of some of the department store players and their evolution in 2013:  Read More
RetailWorks - July 23, 2013 This month marks the tenth anniversary of the establishment of Retail Works as a boutique specialty consulting firm focused on the Canadian retail industry. From the very first client phone call seeking advice and support to help grow their business, Retail Works has been personally rewarding and a wonderful learning experience. RetailWorks - April 30, 2013 About a year ago, I held my regular quarterly meeting with a long standing client. He had just returned from a two week retail industry conference called the Westfield World Retail Study Tour and was clearly energized, focused and visibly excited. He shared with me many of his incredible experiences while visiting the sights and sounds of the best retail shopping centres and high streets in London, New York, Paris, Milan and Tokyo.  Read More
RetailWorks - January 3, 2013 The year 2012 marked the 50th birthday of what has become the dominant category of the retail industry today. 1962 saw the introduction of “Big Box” format, discount retailing with the likes of Walmart, Kmart, Target and Woolco, all opening their first stores that year. In the United States, according to Consumer Reports, 87% of all retail activity in 2010 was done through discount retailers.  Read More
RetailWorks - July 16, 2012 Forty years ago, the concept of "going mobile" had a very different meaning than it does today. In 1971, Pete Townshend of rock legends The Who, wrote and recorded a song entitled "Going Mobile". The lyrical message then was one of celebrating the joy of having a mobile home and travelling the open road at will. Today, mobile is the key component of the technology evolution of smartphones and tablets.  Read More
RetailWorks - November 17, 2011 Thanksgiving in the United States is a long standing tradition traced as far back as 1621 at Plymouth in present day Massachusetts. Originally based on the European festival to celebrate the crop cycles and to give thanks for a bountiful harvest, the thanksgiving feast was shared together with family and community. Over the years, this secular, mostly non-religious and now public holiday, has evolved.  Read More
RetailWorks - January 27, 2011 Every July, since the 13th century, there has been a festival held in Pamplona, Spain where corks explode into the air, and champagne flows for an event known as the “Running of the Bulls”. On-lookers fill the streets and every available window and balcony with singing, cheering and partying for the parade of bulls that will participate in that evening’s bull fight.  Read More
RetailWorks - September 17, 2010 It has been quite some time since I last had the opportunity to manage, hands-on, a retail chain of stores. During the last four months, I have worked closely with a long standing client who wanted some support in focusing their organization on improving sales and productivity.  Read More
RetailWorks - February 23, 2010 Most retail companies recognize the importance of the customer experience as a major building block for sales and loyalty for their brand. Some retailers just give it lip service and use it as part of their mission statements and annual report content. Others actually commit and “put their money where their mouth is”. They conduct regular consumer research and receive direct feedback from their customers on how they are performing on issues  Read More
RetailWorks - December 17, 2009 From the moment the past decade arrived, we all shared great anticipation for what was to come in this, the first decade of the 21st century. With all of the hype and fears of Y2K eliminated, our thoughts turned to a continuation of the good times and growth of the Canadian economy.  Read More
RetailWorks - September 8, 2009 In October, the much anticipated movie, “Creation” will be released to the worldwide movie-going public.
